Renal Pathology Consultation, Wet Tissue
Use
This test is used for evaluating and managing patients with kidney disease, following the progression of known kidney disease or response to therapy, and determining the cause of dysfunction in the transplanted kidney (allograft). It involves a consultative practice that integrates findings from light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy along with clinical and laboratory data to provide a comprehensive evaluation of kidney biopsies. Published standards by the Renal Pathology Society are followed for the diagnostic evaluation and reporting of non-neoplastic kidney disease.
Special Instructions
All necessary information must be submitted in English, including patient history and recent test results. RUSH service is available for emergent cases on Saturdays and holidays, but requires advance notification and approval by a Mayo Clinic Renal Pathologist. Specimens should be shipped in Styrofoam coolers to maintain stability during transport.
Limitations
Failure to provide relevant clinical history and laboratory results may result in delayed interpretation or inability to adequately correlate biopsy findings with the clinical picture. The test requires the integration of light microscopy, immunofluorescent histology, and electron microscopic findings which are dependent on the quality and preparation of biopsy samples.
