Respiratory Panel, PCR, Nasopharyngeal
Use
This test is used for the rapid detection of respiratory infections caused by 22 pathogens, including adenovirus, coronavirus serotypes, SARS-CoV-2, human metapneumovirus, human rhinovirus/enterovirus, influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It helps in diagnosing infections that may have significant morbidity, especially in immunocompromised individuals. This test provides a rapid qualitative detection from nasopharyngeal swab specimens using multiplex PCR, aiding in timely clinical decisions.
Special Instructions
This test is not recommended as a test of cure and is specifically designed for nasopharyngeal swab specimens only. Specimens must be collected using a proper technique and stored in an appropriate transport medium. Nasopharyngeal swabs must be shipped refrigerated and processed within 72 hours or frozen prior to shipment if delayed. Transport media must be from specific acceptable types as listed in the specimen requirements to avoid cancellation.
Limitations
The test should be used as an aid in diagnosis and not as the sole criterion for clinical conclusions. A negative result does not exclude the presence of infection and should be considered in conjunction with clinical presentation. The panel does not test for all infectious agents, and the presence of microbial DNA or RNA does not necessarily indicate active disease or viable organisms. Coinfections may occur, and results should be interpreted in the context of other clinical findings. Genetic variability in target sequences or improper specimen handling can lead to false-negative results.
