Respiratory Profile, Region 19, Puerto Rico, Serum
Use
The test aids in assessing sensitization to various inhalant allergens commonly found in Puerto Rico, helping to identify the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It is useful for identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes, and for confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy. This test is important for investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
This test is not useful for patients who have been treated with immunotherapy to ascertain if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in cases where identifying allergen specificity is not integral to medical management. False positives may occur with markedly elevated serum IgE levels, leading to nonspecific binding. The test should be interpreted within the clinical context, acknowledging factors such as age, sex, history, and potential exposures. Normal IgE levels do not rule out allergic disease in patients with high suspicion, and further allergen-specific IgE testing may be needed.
