Clinical Use

Use

This test is beneficial for assessing sensitization to various inhalant allergens commonly found in subtropic Florida, which is south of Orlando. Special Instructions

This test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in those whose medical management does not depend on the identification of allergen specificity. Limitations

Elevated concentrations of total IgE are not exclusively diagnostic of allergic disease and must be interpreted in the clinical context of the patient. Normal concentrations do not rule out allergic disease, and false-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. The test's utility is limited in patients with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens where significant IgE levels may still be present.
