Ribosome P Antibodies, IgG, Serum
Use
This test is used as an adjunct in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It may be useful in the phenotypic stratification of SLE patients at risk for neuropsychiatric SLE, lupus nephritis, and/or hepatitis. Anti-ribosomal P antibodies are associated with clinical features such as malar rash, oral ulcers, and photosensitivity, as well as neuropsychiatric and hepatic involvement in SLE patients. Detection of these antibodies provides important clues for diagnosis and disease activity management.
Special Instructions
The test involves detecting antibodies that may not be uniformly present in all SLE patients; hence, its results should not solely be relied upon for diagnosis. Positivity alone should not confirm or exclude SLE.
Limitations
The presence of anti-ribosomal P antibodies alone is not sufficient to establish an SLE diagnosis or rule it out when clinical symptoms suggest otherwise. Variability in clinical associations can occur due to demographic differences, cohort heterogeneity, and differing testing methodologies. Testing should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other diagnostic procedures.
