S-100B Protein, Serum
Use
S-100B protein is a low-molecular-weight calcium-binding protein that is present in high concentrations in glial cells of the central nervous system. The measurement of S-100B in serum can be used in the assessment of patients with traumatic brain injury to provide prognostic information on the extent of injury. It is also useful in the assessment of patients with melanoma, where elevated levels may indicate metastatic disease.
Special Instructions
Ensure the specimen is clotted completely at ambient temperature before processing. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection. Specimens should be refrigerated during transport to maintain stability.
Limitations
Results obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably. The performance of this test has not been reviewed by the FDA, and it should not be used as the sole criterion for patient management decisions. A comprehensive clinical evaluation is recommended to fully interpret results.
