Semen Analysis, Semen
Use
This test is useful for determining male fertility status by analyzing semen for sperm count, motility, and other critical parameters. Evaluating semen quality is crucial as it provides information about sperm quantity and quality, as well as the overall condition of the seminal fluid, which plays a significant role in nutrition and transportation of spermatozoa to the endocervix.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used to check sterility following a vasectomy. Use POSV / Post Vasectomy Check for such cases. The test should be shipped within 24 hours of collection from Monday to Thursday, avoiding shipment on the day before a holiday. A separate specimen is required to rule out ejaculatory duct blockage, where a positive result indicates no blockage. Required information includes semen volume, viscosity, pH, appearance, and days of sexual abstinence.
Limitations
Semen parameters may vary widely even in the same individual, and parameters falling outside normal ranges do not necessarily indicate infertility. Borderline results should be interpreted with caution, and multiple samples might be needed to confirm fertility status. The specimen's suitability for fructose testing is compromised due to dilution media, and improper specimen handling can affect results.
