Somatostatin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Somatostatin is a cyclic polypeptide hormone originally isolated from the hypothalamus and is known for its ability to inhibit the release of growth hormone from the pituitary. This test aids in the characterization of pancreatic islet cell tumors and other neuroendocrine tumors by utilizing antibodies to somatostatin, which is produced in the intrinsic nerves of the intestinal wall, endocrine cells of the digestive mucosa, and D cells of pancreatic islets.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. Technical component stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation to avoid cancellation of the technical component stains. Follow shipping instructions by attaching the proper labels to the transport container.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation. Stability of paraffin sections varies and is antigen dependent, with best practice suggesting sections to be cut within 6 weeks. Environmental factors can affect the charge and staining of glass slides, potentially leading to inconsistent staining.
