Streptococcus pneumoniae IgG Antibodies, Total, Serum
Use
This test is used for assessing the IgG antibody response to both nonconjugated and conjugated pneumococcal vaccines. It is also utilized to determine a person's ability to generate an antibody response to polysaccharide antigens, which is crucial in evaluating humoral or combined immunodeficiencies, especially in patients previously tested for Streptococcus pneumoniae antibodies. The test helps in assessing vaccine responses and screening for potential immune deficiencies.
Special Instructions
This test is preferred for follow-up testing in patients who have been previously tested for Streptococcus pneumoniae antibodies or for pre/post vaccination assessments. It is recommended for patients with suspected immune deficiencies to assess their pneumococcal vaccination response.
Limitations
The humoral immune response to Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccination can be influenced by several factors such as age, immune status, history of vaccinations, past infections, and carrier status. The protective concentrations of IgG required for preventing infections from Streptococcus pneumoniae have not been defined. Additionally, quantitation of IgG antibodies against pneumococcal serotypes does not indicate their functional capacity, such as their ability to perform opsonization.
