Thrombophilia Profile, Plasma and Whole Blood
Use
The Thrombophilia Profile is useful for evaluating patients with thrombosis or hypercoagulability states. It helps in detecting conditions such as lupus-like anticoagulant, dysfibrinogenemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation/intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis. This test also aids in identifying deficiencies in antithrombin, protein C, or protein S, and detecting activated protein C resistance, including the factor V Leiden and prothrombin F2 variants if indicated. These conditions are often associated with inherited or acquired thrombotic disorders and can guide clinical management in at-risk patients.
Special Instructions
Both blood and plasma are required for this test. It is essential to collect specimens prior to anticoagulant and thrombolytic therapy. Ensure that whole blood is sent in the original tube and not aliquoted. Shipping all specimens in the same container is recommended. The test must be ordered using the Coagulation Test Request (T753) form if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Test results may be affected by anticoagulant therapy and are best performed when patients are not receiving oral vitamin K inhibitors, heparin, or other similar agents. Patients' recent transfusions can affect results. Careful handling of specimens, including adequate centrifugation to prevent platelet contamination, is crucial for accurate results. Test performance may vary depending on patient-specific factors and underlying conditions.
