Thrombopoietin (TPO)
Use
This test is used to measure levels of thrombopoietin (TPO) in the blood. Thrombopoietin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the liver and kidneys, which regulates the production of platelets by the bone marrow. Monitoring TPO levels can be useful in assessing platelet production disorders and can aid in the diagnosis of conditions such as thrombocytopenia and myelodysplastic syndromes.
Special Instructions
Blood should be drawn in a red-top tube or serum gel tube, with the serum spun down and sent frozen in a plastic vial.
Limitations
The test should not be used for diagnosis without confirmation by other medically established means. Gross lipemia and icterus in specimens will cause rejection, which may interfere with accurate measurement of thrombopoietin levels.
