Tomato IgG
Use
The test measures Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies specific to tomato, which may indicate an immunologic sensitization to the tomato allergen. While not definitive for diagnosing food allergies, it can be used in clinical situations to identify foods for diet elimination and challenge in patients with food-related complaints.
Special Instructions
This test should only be ordered by physicians who understand its limitations; it merely indicates sensitization, not a definitive allergy diagnosis. Ensure to use a plain red-top tube for collection; a serum gel tube is an acceptable alternative. Spin down the blood sample and send 0.5 mL serum refrigerated in a plastic vial.
Limitations
The presence of IgG antibodies specific to food allergens such as tomato does not conclusively evidence a food allergy. The test is meant as an aid in conjunction with clinical evaluation and should not solely guide allergy diagnoses.
