Toxoplasma gondii, Molecular Detection, PCR, Blood
Use
Supporting the diagnosis of active toxoplasmosis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Detection of T gondii DNA by PCR on blood may confirm or support serologic testing results; however, blood may not be sensitive for organ‑specific disease such as ocular or cerebral toxoplasmosis, so other specimens such as ocular fluid, spinal fluid, or fresh tissue should be considered.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Microbiology Test Request (T244) with the specimen.
Limitations
This assay is designed for use in patients with a clinical history and symptoms consistent with toxoplasmosis and should not be used to screen healthy patients. A negative result does not exclude disease, especially for organ‑specific involvement; blood may not be a sensitive specimen, and results depend on adequate collection and absence of interfering substances.
