Trypsin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for identifying cells with acinar differentiation in the pancreas. Trypsinogen is an enzyme involved in protein metabolism that is made by the acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas. After secretion into the small intestine, it is cleaved to its active form, trypsin. The trypsin antibody stains cells within acini, while ductal and islet cells remain negative. The identification of acinar differentiation is helpful in classifying pancreatic carcinomas.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain, with no pathologist interpretation provided. It should not be ordered alongside PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as technical component stains will be canceled. Any IHC/ISH stains performed with PATHC will be done at the discretion of the reviewing pathologist, incurring an additional charge.
Limitations
The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and the stability thresholds vary widely and are antigen dependent. Best practice dictates that paraffin sections should be cut within 6 weeks. Glass slide charge can be affected by environmental factors, which may alter staining results, emphasizing the need for appropriate selection and handling of slides.
