Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide, Plasma
Use
This test is used for detecting vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-producing tumors in patients with chronic diarrheal diseases. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), originally isolated from porcine small intestine, functions as a potent vasodilator. VIP is distributed across various bodily regions, including the central nervous system, digestive tract, respiratory organs, and glands, where it stimulates gastrointestinal secretion and hormone release. VIP-producing tumors, often located in the pancreas, can lead to symptoms such as watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Oncology Test Request (T729) with the specimen. Day(s) performed: Monday, Thursday. Contact Customer Service for fee-related queries. The test requires specific collection and handling procedures to ensure the viability and accuracy of results.
Limitations
The test results should not be used as absolute evidence for the presence of malignant disease. They must be interpreted alongside clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. The absence of elevated VIP does not rule out malignancy. Sensitivity of the assay may be lower compared to previous assays. Human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA) or other heterophile antibodies can interfere, and results should be correlated with clinical presentation.
