Vibrio Culture, Feces
Use
This test is used to determine whether Vibrio species may be the cause of diarrhea. It provides evidence of the presence of the bacterium in feces in a viable state and helps in obtaining an isolate for antibacterial susceptibility testing. It is not generally useful for patients who have been hospitalized for more than three days as the yield from these specimens is very low.
Special Instructions
Minnesota health care providers are required to report all confirmed or suspected cases of Vibrio bacteriosis to the Minnesota Department of Health. Clients must refer to their local health departments for public health submission of Vibrio isolates.
Limitations
The test yield is reduced if the specimen is not preserved within two hours of collection. Buffered glycerol saline is an unacceptable transport media for Vibrio culture.
