Vigabatrin (Sabril)
Use
The Vigabatrin (Sabril) test measures the concentration of vigabatrin, a GABA transaminase inhibitor used as an anticonvulsant agent. Monitoring vigabatrin levels helps ensure therapeutic concentrations are achieved while preventing toxicity. Vigabatrin is used primarily for complex partial seizures in adults and infantile spasms in pediatric patients. Accurate measurement allows for individualized dosing and therapy adjustments based on patient response.
Special Instructions
This test is available for order by New York State clients. Specimens must be sent refrigerated to ensure stability. Use only the specified collection tubes and handling protocols to avoid assay interference.
Limitations
Therapeutic and toxic ranges for vigabatrin concentrations have not been firmly established. The provided expected serum concentration range is based on typical dosages. Hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus do not affect the test; however, incorrect tube types or inadequate volume could lead to sample rejection. All interpretation should be done in conjunction with clinical findings.
