Vimentin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for the identification of cells of mesenchymal origin in normal and neoplastic tissues. Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein present in cells of mesenchymal origin. A number of tumors coexpress vimentin and cytokeratin, and coexpression of desmin and vimentin is reported in soft tissue tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, and alveolar soft tissue sarcomas.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide a pathologist's interpretation. If ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, the technical component stains will be canceled. Clients are advised to attach the green 'Attention Pathology' label and the pink Immunostain Technical Only label to the transport container.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, with antigen stability being variable. Environmental factors may affect the charge of glass slides, potentially altering slide staining and causing inconsistent staining results due to poor slide surface chemistry.
