West Nile Virus, RNA, PCR, Molecular Detection, Random, Urine
Use
West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that primarily infects birds but can occasionally infect humans. This test is used for rapid detection of WNV RNA, specifically lineages 1 and 2, through PCR testing. It is valuable for diagnosing early WNV infection when serology is not yet effective and can be especially useful for immunocompromised patients. PCR testing in urine allows for extended detection of WNV RNA beyond the initial symptom onset.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used for screening asymptomatic individuals. It is intended for patients with signs and symptoms of WNV disease. For specimen collection, random urine should be collected without preservatives in a sterile container and labeled accordingly.
Limitations
The assay's sensitivity is highly dependent on the timing of specimen collection relative to illness onset. A negative PCR result does not exclude WNV infection, and test results must be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and serological results. The test detects both viable and nonviable virus particles; therefore, results may not correlate directly with viral culture results.
