Yersinia Culture, Feces
Use
This test is used for determining whether Yersinia species may be the cause of diarrhea, particularly through the detection of the bacteria in feces. It offers reflexive testing for Yersinia species from nucleic acid amplification test-positive feces. The test is generally not useful for patients hospitalized longer than 3 days due to low yield of results, as well as a reduced likelihood of finding previously undetected pathogens.
Special Instructions
Healthcare professionals in Minnesota are required to report all confirmed or suspected enteric yersiniosis cases to the Minnesota Department of Health. Clients should refer to their local health departments concerning public health submission of Yersinia isolates. Specimen must be submitted within 96 hours of collection, and the source information must be included.
Limitations
The test is not intended for diagnosing plague caused by Yersinia pestis. It may not detect all species of Yersinia. The yield of Yersinia is reduced with delayed specimen transit (>2 hours) for unpreserved specimens. The performance of susceptibility testing requires an additional order if needed. Delayed specimens and patients hospitalized longer than 3 days may have reduced diagnostic yield.
