Ziprasidone (Geodone, Zeldox)
Use
This test is used to monitor plasma levels of Ziprasidone, a medication used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It ensures therapeutic dosing and helps in evaluating adherence and response to therapy. Monitoring the levels can aid in optimizing dose therapeutic levels and minimizing side effects or toxicity. Clinical situations where monitoring is recommended include changes in the treatment regimen, signs of toxicity, or lack of efficacy.
Special Instructions
Do not use plasma gel or serum gel tubes. Proper specimen handling and timely submission are crucial to maintain specimen integrity. The plasma or serum should be spun down and sent refrigerated in a plastic vial to ensure sample stability during transport.
Limitations
Interpretation of the results should be considered in the context of the patient’s clinical status. Variability in the assay results can occur due to differences in genetic makeup, liver function, drug-drug interactions, patient size, age, adherence to medication, and the timing of the last dose before sample collection. Interfering substances in the specimen due to medications or other compounds may alter the test results.
