Epithelial membrane antigen, technical only
Use
EMA is a transmembrane protein normally expressed in glandular or luminal epithelial cells and hematopoietic cells, absent in skin epithelium and mesenchymal cells. Overexpression is common in malignancies and leads to tumorigenesis. EMA is highly expressed by most carcinomas (especially adenocarcinomas) and hematologic cancers. Technical component only. Pathologist read not included.
Special Instructions
Fresh Tissues: Specimens may be fixed in formalin for 24-72 hours by collection sites, then transferred to 70% ethanol and stored at 2-8°C for longer term storage if needed. Samples must be tested 3 months after placing in ethanol. Positively charged glass slides required to prevent background staining and prevent tissue loss. Slides should be left unbaked.
Limitations
Technical component only. Pathologist interpretation not included. Specimens fixed in fixatives other than 10% NBF or B plus will be rejected. Specimens must be tested within specified timelines after fixation.
