MM Reflex Panel – IGH/FGFR3 and IGH/MAF
Use
This test is a FISH panel performed on CD138+ cells in bone marrow specimens to detect IGH::FGFR3 fusion / t(4;14) and IGH::MAF fusion / t(14;16). It is useful for assessing chromosomal abnormalities associated with multiple myeloma. The test is reflexed when gains of IGH are observed in the Plasma Cell Neoplasm Panel. It can also be ordered as a stand-alone test for clinical applications in diagnosing or managing multiple myeloma.
Special Instructions
All efforts will be made to process and report samples received over 72 hours post-collection, although bone marrow is the preferred specimen for hematological malignancies. Ambient or refrigerated shipping is recommended to protect samples from extreme temperatures. Gel packs should be used to maintain temperature during transit, but should not be in direct contact with the samples.
Limitations
The test detects only the specified fusions but not other possible genetic alterations. Results may be affected by inadequate specimen volume or poor sample integrity due to clotted specimens, exposure to extreme temperature, or toxic anticoagulants. Delays in processing beyond 72 hours may impact results.
