Mucicarmine Stain
Use
Mucicarmine special stain is used to detect epithelial mucins in tissue sections. When applied, it stains mucins a deep rose to red color, aiding in the identification of mucin-producing tumors, such as adenocarcinomas, and distinguishing them from non-mucin-producing tumors, like squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, mucicarmine staining is valuable in diagnosing fungal infections caused by encapsulated organisms, as it highlights the presence of the fungal capsule.
Special Instructions
Fresh Tissue: Specimens may be fixed in formalin for 6-72 hours by collection sites, then transferred to 70% ethanol and stored at 2-8°C for longer-term storage if needed. This is NOT preferred. Samples should be tested 3 months after placing in ethanol. Unstained slides: Positively charged glass slides required to prevent background staining and prevent tissue loss. Slides should be left unbaked.
Limitations
Specimens must be fixed in 10% NBF or B plus. All other fixatives will be rejected. Fresh Tissue tissues have a stability of ≤ 72 Hours, while Formalin-fixed, Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissues and unstained slides have indefinite stability.
