Smooth Muscle Actin
Use
Smooth muscle actin (SMA) is a key component of the cytoskeleton in smooth muscle cells and is commonly used in pathology for identifying smooth muscle tumors. SMA is expressed in smooth muscle tumors such as leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas, as well as in myofibroblastic lesions.
Special Instructions
Fresh Tissues: Specimens may be fixed in formalin for 24-72 hours by collection sites, then transferred to 70% ethanol and stored at 2-8°C for longer term storage if needed. Samples must be tested 3 months after placing in ethanol. Unstained slides: Positively charged glass slides required to prevent background staining and prevent tissue loss. Slides should be left unbaked.
Limitations
Tests must be performed within three months after ethanol storage. Specimens must be fixed in 10% NBF or B plus; all other fixatives will be rejected.
