Smooth Muscle Actin, technical only
Use
Smooth muscle actin (SMA) is a key component of the cytoskeleton in smooth muscle cells and is commonly used in pathology for identifying smooth muscle tumors. SMA is expressed in smooth muscle tumors such as leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas, as well as in myofibroblastic lesions. Technical component only. Pathologist read not included.
Special Instructions
Fresh Tissues: Specimens may be fixed in formalin for 24-72 hours by collection sites, then transferred to 70% ethanol and stored at 2-8°C for longer term storage if needed. Slides should be left unbaked.
Limitations
Specimens must be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) or B plus for proper analysis. Other fixatives will be rejected. The test is not applicable for pathologist interpretation as it is a technical-only component.
