Smooth muscle myosin
Use
Smooth muscle myosin (SMM) is essential for the contraction of smooth muscle cells and is used in pathology to identify smooth muscle tumors. It is typically expressed in tumors such as leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas, helping differentiate these tumors from other soft tissue malignancies, including fibromas and malignant fibrous histiocytomas. SMM is also used to confirm the myogenic origin of a tumor, which aids in the diagnosis and classification of smooth muscle-related neoplasms.
Special Instructions
Specimens may be fixed in formalin for 24-72 hours by collection sites, then transferred to 70% ethanol and stored at 2-8°C for longer-term storage if needed. Samples must be tested within 3 months after placing in ethanol. Unstained slides require positively charged glass slides to prevent background staining and tissue loss. Slides should be left unbaked.
Limitations
The use of fixatives other than 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) or B plus may result in specimen rejection. Fresh tissues must not exceed the stability timeframe of ≤ 72 hours.
