Foresight® Carrier Screen
Use
Foresight® Carrier Screen is a genetic carrier screening test designed to identify whether individuals carry pathogenic variants in genes associated with serious inherited conditions that could be passed to offspring. It helps clinicians and prospective parents understand reproductive risk — alone and as part of a couple — to make informed family planning decisions. The test includes multiple panel options (e.g., Fundamental, Universal, Universal Plus) prioritizing conditions based on severity, prevalence, and clinical actionability and offers a high detection rate (>99%) across ancestries for most genes.
Special Instructions
Providers order the test via a test requisition form; if virtual ordering is selected, Myriad can send saliva collection kits directly to patients (single kits or paired kits for couples). Patients complete specimen collection per instructions and ship to the Myriad laboratory using pre-paid packaging. Providers must complete all required order information to ensure proper processing.
Limitations
Foresight provides carrier status information only; it does not diagnose clinical disease in carriers nor guarantee future child health. A positive carrier result indicates increased risk of transmitting the condition, but additional partner testing is required to assess combined reproductive risk. Conditions not on the selected panel are not assessed. Recent blood transfusion or bone marrow transplant can interfere with genetic accuracy and may necessitate waiting before testing. Tests must be ordered by a healthcare provider.
