Mucicarmine
Use
Mucicarmine staining is used to identify epithelial mucins, namely acid mucopolysaccharides. Staining is useful to distinguishing mucin-negative undifferentiated squamous cell lesions from mucin-positive adenocarcinomas. Additionally, it will stain the mucopolysaccharide capsule of Cryptococcus neoformans.
Special Instructions
A formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue block is preferred. Use cold pack for transport, ensuring it is not in direct contact with specimen. NYS clients must provide date and time of collection.
Limitations
Mucicarmine staining specifically targets epithelial mucins and may not identify other forms of mucins or similar compounds, potentially leading to false negatives in certain histological contexts.
