NF (Neurofilament)
Use
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments found in neurons and related structures. They are expressed in tumors of neural origin or tumors displaying neuronal differentiation, such as neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, and retinoblastoma.
Special Instructions
Block and slide identifiers should be clearly written and match exactly with the specimen ID and labeling as noted on the requisition. Use a cold pack for transport, ensuring it is not in direct contact with the specimen.
Limitations
The test labels neurons, neuronal processes, peripheral nerves, sympathetic ganglion cells, and adrenal medulla. The cell bodies of neurons, containing non-phosphorylated neurofilament, are weakly stained.
