Use
Smooth muscle actin (SMA) immunohistochemistry is used to identify smooth muscle cells and myoepithelial cells. It stains tissues such as the muscularis propria and mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, uterine myometrium, medial layer of blood vessels, and myoepithelial cells of salivary glands, and is useful for identifying smooth muscle tumors like leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas.
Special Instructions
Technical component only (“Tech Only”) offered. Block and slide identifiers must match exactly with specimen labeling as noted on the requisition. For New York State clients, date and time of collection should be provided in transportation packaging (“Use cold pack for transport, making sure cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen”).

Collection Instructions
A formalin-fixed, paraffin‑embedded (FFPE) tissue block is preferred or one unbaked, unstained H&E slide (required) and two to three positively charged unstained slides (4–5 microns) per test/antibody ordered.
Storage Instructions
Use cold pack for transport, ensuring cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen; NYS clients should provide date and time of collection.
