No-Charge Genetic Testing and Counseling Program for Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Use
The Resonate program is designed for diagnosing sensorineural hearing loss by identifying underlying genetic causes. It provides genetic testing for individuals under 40 years in the U.S. with unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss or auditory neuropathy. Testing can also diagnose syndromic conditions, guide treatment decisions, and assess inheritance risk, potentially aiding personalized patient care and eligibility for gene therapy trials.
Special Instructions
The Resonate program eligibility includes individuals under 40 years in the U.S. with specific hearing loss conditions. A healthcare provider can order this no-charge test and refer patients for genetic counseling. Collection kits are sent to the patient's home, and the testing includes nearly 300 genes related to hearing loss.
Limitations
While the Resonate program offers comprehensive genetic testing, it only includes genes associated with hearing loss. The test has not been cleared or approved by the US FDA. DNA from buccal and saliva specimens may be contaminated with microbial and food DNA, potentially affecting quality and leading to testing delays or the need for a second specimen.
