B‑Type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP)
Also known as: Brain Natriuretic Peptide, BNP
Use
This test is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of congestive heart failure (CHF). BNP is a marker of cardiac dysfunction, correlating with severity of symptomatic and asymptomatic left ventricular hypertrophy and CHF, including NYHA classification. It helps differentiate dyspnea due to heart failure versus pulmonary disease, and results outside reference intervals indicate increased probability of heart failure, guiding further cardiac evaluation. BNP levels also serve in guiding management and prognosis, as effective therapy typically reduces BNP concentrations.
Special Instructions
No patient preparation is required.
Limitations
Heterophile antibodies (e.g., antibodies to animal immunoglobulins) can cause anomalous results. BNP results vary across methodologies, and results obtained by different methods are not directly comparable; when monitoring patients, the same method should be used consistently.
