Bilirubin, Total and Direct, Neonatal
Use
This test is used to assess bilirubin levels (total, direct, and indirect) in newborn infants, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of neonatal jaundice, and evaluating liver function or conjugation disorders in early postnatal period.
Special Instructions
Patient should be less than 60 days of age. Specimen must be protected from light. Draw and wrap spun serum separator Microtainer® tubes in foil to minimize photodegradation.
Limitations
Endogenous carotenoids in infants older than ten days may affect results. Hemolysis and inappropriate anticoagulants (other than heparin) may interfere. Light exposure must be minimized.
