Use
The placenta converts DHEA‑S produced by the fetal adrenals to estriol and other estrogens. Estriol is useful in assessing fetal adrenal and placental function during pregnancy and is commonly used as one of the maternal serum biochemical markers for screening chromosomal trisomies such as Down syndrome.
