Lipoprotein(a)/Lp(a) Test
Also known as: Lp (a)
Use
This test measures lipoprotein(a), which is a lipoprotein similar to LDL cholesterol but more likely to build up in the walls of blood vessels, increasing risk for cardiovascular disease including heart attack, stroke, and other diseases of the blood vessels. Lp(a) levels are largely determined genetically, appear by age five, remain stable throughout life, are more common in African Americans and South Asians, and may rise in women after menopause when estrogen levels decrease. Acute illness may also result in temporary change. Most people with elevated Lp(a) are asymptomatic; once measured, repeat testing is usually not required unless clinically indicated.
