Multiple Sclerosis Panel
Use
The Multiple Sclerosis Panel aids in the evaluation of suspected multiple sclerosis by detecting myelin basic protein and oligoclonal IgG bands in cerebrospinal fluid, which are associated with demyelinating processes characteristic of MS. It provides supportive evidence for diagnosis when interpreted alongside clinical and imaging findings.
Special Instructions
Both CSF and serum specimens are required. It is preferred that collection date and time coincide for both samples, though collected within 48 hours is acceptable. If serum is not provided, client will be contacted. CSF collection should preferably be from lumbar puncture tube #4 to minimize blood contamination.
Limitations
The panel is limited by requirement for both CSF and serum; adequacy of specimen volume and timing is critical. Blood contamination of CSF may interfere with results, and hemolysis or xanthochromia can cause rejection. Interpretation must consider potential confounders; results alone do not confirm diagnosis and must be integrated with clinical context.
