Mycobacterium avium‑intracellulare DNA, Qualitative, RT‑PCR
Also known as: Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), MAI DNA, Qualitative, Real-Time PCR
Use
This assay provides qualitative detection of DNA specific to Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare (collectively known as Mycobacterium avium complex or MAC), enabling rapid identification of these non‑tuberculous mycobacterial pathogens in respiratory and other clinical specimens. The molecular approach facilitates diagnosis earlier than culture-based methods and supports early management decisions.
Special Instructions
Performing laboratory: Quest Diagnostics San Juan Capistrano. Lab operates on Tuesdays and Fridays. Indicate specimen source in comments, and on specimen and batch sheet. Collection instructions vary by specimen type. Refrigerated transport is acceptable. Heparin-containing specimens are rejected.
Limitations
Sensitivity and specificity depend on specimen type; false negatives may occur if specimen quality is poor. Heparin-containing specimens are unacceptable and may result in sample rejection. This qualitative assay does not provide quantitation, susceptibility data, or distinguish between viable and nonviable organisms. Interpretation should consider clinical context and culture results when available.
