Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Blood
Also known as: FC-143 Component, PFOA
Use
This blood test measures the level of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the nine PFAS (‘forever chemicals’) compounds identified by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) as most likely associated with health risks. Elevated PFAS levels in blood have been associated with potential increased risk for dyslipidemia, thyroid disease, certain cancers (e.g., kidney, testicular, breast), and immune effects. It is intended to assess exposure; it does not diagnose or predict health outcomes, and results should be interpreted by a physician in the context of exposure history and potential follow‑up testing. PFAS testing does not identify sources of exposure or indicate causation. The test is not appropriate for forensic use. (Information derived from Quest’s PFAS test panel description, NASEM guidance, and Quest Insights article.)

Limitations
This test measures PFOA levels in blood at the time of collection and cannot identify sources of exposure, determine future health outcomes, or diagnose disease. Clinical interpretation must consider exposure history, and follow‑up testing may be needed based on levels (e.g., lipid panel, thyroid function, urinalysis) as per NASEM recommendations. It is not appropriate for forensic use, and elevated levels indicate only association, not causation. (Derived from questhealth.com and Quest diagnostic insights.)
