Use
This test is used to monitor postprandial hyperglycemia and short-term glycemic control when hemoglobin A1c is between 6.1% and 7.9%. It provides an alternative method for monitoring glucose control in patients with diabetes mellitus, including Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. The test measures the concentration of 1,5-Anhydroglucitol in serum or plasma, which is inversely related to recent blood sugar levels, providing a more sensitive assessment of short-term changes in glucose levels.
Special Instructions
This test is approved by the New York State Department of Health and can be ordered for patients as part of standard monitoring procedures for diabetes management.
Limitations
The test is limited by its inability to replace long-term indicators of glycemic control like HbA1c. It may not accurately reflect glucose control in patients with renal dysfunction, dietary restrictions, or those on certain medications that affect glucose transport or metabolism. The test is primarily designed for detecting postprandial hyperglycemic excursions, which might not be captured by HbA1c measurements.
