Test for the laboratory diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG)
Special Instructions
The test includes the assessment of acetylcholine receptor-binding, receptor-blocking, and receptor-modulating antibodies. It utilizes a combination of radioimmunoassay (RIA) and flow cytometry techniques to provide comprehensive diagnostic information. Suitable specimen is serum separated from cells within 45 minutes of collection.
Limitations
This test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. In rare cases, AChR antibodies can be found in patients with other autoimmune disorders or with thymoma without MG. The specific autoantibody cannot be identified in up to 10 percent of patients with MG. Autoantibody levels may not correlate with disease severity, although serial antibody titers in individual patients tend to correlate with disease status. Striational antibodies are associated with the late-onset MG subgroup and are rarely found in AChR antibody-negative MG.
