Use
This test is useful for aiding in the classification of pituitary adenomas and neoplasms with ectopic hormone production. It helps in the immunohistochemical detection of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which is a hormone produced by the corticotrophs in the adenohypophysis (anterior lobe) of the pituitary gland. The test is pertinent as normal pituitary tissue shows positive staining in a large population of cells (approximately 15% to 20%).

Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only the technical performance of the immunohistochemical stain. Interpretation should be performed by a qualified pathologist in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests. The stability of the antigen can be affected by the time since paraffin sectioning, and slide surface chemistry can alter staining if environmental factors degrade the quality of the glass slides.
