Alkaline Phosphatase Isoenzymes, Serum or Plasma

Use
The Alkaline Phosphatase Isoenzymes test is used to determine the amounts contributed by bone and liver isoenzymes when total alkaline phosphatase activity is elevated. This helps in evaluating liver function and is useful in identifying disorders of bone and liver.
Special Instructions
The presence of heat-stable isoenzymes (i.e., germ cell and placental) will be detected but their activities cannot be differentiated from the liver isoenzyme.
Limitations
Tests may not differentiate between isoenzymes fully due to overlapping activity presence. Specimens collected in EDTA, sodium fluoride, sodium citrate, or potassium oxalate are unacceptable, and grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens may skew results. The test uses quantitative heat inactivation and enzymatic assay, which may have inherent analytical constraints.

Allow serum specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer to ARUP standard transport tube.
