Use
The Allergen, Food, Walnut (Juglans spp.) IgE test is used to detect specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in the patient's serum that are directed against walnut allergens. This test can help assess the likelihood of an IgE-mediated allergic reaction to walnuts and is used in conjunction with clinical history and other diagnostic information to evaluate the risk of allergic responses. The results indicate the concentration of allergen-specific IgE, where higher concentrations suggest a greater likelihood of allergic reactions, although they may not correlate directly with the severity of clinical symptoms.
Special Instructions
It is important to separate serum from cells as soon as possible after collection, within 2 hours if possible. The test is performed using ARUP's standard transport tube after separation of the serum. If multiple allergens are being tested, refer to the allergy specimen collection instructions available on the ARUP website.
Limitations
While the test measures allergen-specific IgE concentrations, these values may not always correlate with clinical symptoms upon exposure to the allergen. False negatives can occur, meaning a negative test result does not conclusively rule out a walnut allergy or anaphylaxis. Further clinical evaluation and history are required for a comprehensive allergy assessment. The correlation of laboratory findings with clinical manifestations and additional in vivo tests is necessary for accurate diagnosis.
