Use
This test is used to detect and quantify IgE antibodies specific to the paper wasp allergen. The presence of IgE indicates sensitization, which can be associated with allergic reactions, ranging from mild to severe, including anaphylaxis. This test is significant for individuals with suspected allergies to paper wasp stings, aiding clinicians in diagnosing paper wasp venom allergy and guiding management of allergic reactions.
Special Instructions
Specimen should be collected in a serum separator tube. Patient interactions should be minimized. After collection, serum must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours. For multiple allergen orders, refer to the 'Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions' at ARUP's website.
Limitations
Immunoassay results at 0.10-0.34 kU/L are for specialist use, as clinical relevance is undetermined. While higher IgE levels correlate with allergen-specific sensitivity, they do not predict clinical outcomes or correlate with skin testing. Clinical correlation with history and in vivo reactivity is essential. A negative result does not exclude the presence of paper wasp allergy or anaphylaxis.
