Use
Allergen testing for patients in the central Midwest region (Illinois, Missouri, Iowa) is essential for identifying specific allergen sensitivities related to the unique flora and fauna of the area. The test measures Immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels specific to various allergens, which can help determine the likelihood of an IgE-mediated allergic reaction. Although IgE concentrations may reflect the degree of allergen sensitization, they do not consistently correlate with the severity of clinical allergic reactions.
Special Instructions
To ensure accurate results, multiple patient encounters should be avoided during allergen testing. Collect serum in a Serum Separator Tube (SST), and multiple specimen tubes should be avoided. After collection, serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours and transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Storage and transport of the specimen should be refrigerated.
Limitations
The correlation of allergy laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens is crucial. A negative result does not rule out the possibility of an allergy or anaphylaxis. Furthermore, allergen results between 0.10 and 0.34 kU/L are intended for specialist interpretation, as the clinical implications are undetermined. IgE levels alone may not predict clinical allergy severity or skin test results, and increasing IgE concentrations may not correlate with clinical response.
