Use
This test is used to measure allergen-specific IgE levels in serum for various indoor allergens. Such testing assists in diagnosing and managing allergic conditions, specifically in understanding potential triggers for allergic reactions. Increasing ranges of allergen-specific IgE concentration may reflect an increased potential for clinical reactions when exposed to specific allergens. However, allergen IgE levels do not necessarily correlate with severity of clinical response. The test results should be correlated with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens for accurate diagnosis and management.
Special Instructions
Multiple specimen tubes and multiple patient encounters should be avoided to ensure adequate volume utility for allergen testing. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible, or within two hours of collection, for optimal test performance.
Limitations
Levels of allergen-specific IgE detected between 0.10-0.34 kU/L are clinically undetermined and intended for specialist use. Despite variations in levels correlating with specific IgE concentrations, they may not accurately reflect the actual clinical reaction upon exposure to allergens or skin test accuracy. Allergy laboratory results must be correlated with patient medical history and in vivo allergen reactivity. A negative test result does not exclude allergy presence or anaphylaxis risk.
