Use
This test is used to evaluate possible allergic reactions caused by latex and cross-reactive food allergens, by measuring the concentration of allergen-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the serum. It helps in the assessment of allergies for foods like avocado, banana, celery, chestnut, grape, kiwi, papaya, potato, tomato, and watermelon. The results of the test should be considered in conjunction with clinical findings and history as they may not directly correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin testing results.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to prevent influencing test results. After specimen collection, serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible, preferably within 2 hours, and transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.
Limitations
The concentrations of allergen-specific IgE detected by this test may not correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin testing results when challenged with a specific allergen. A negative result does not necessarily rule out a clinical allergy or even anaphylaxis. Allergen results in the range of 0.10-0.34 kU/L are intended for specialist use, as their clinical relevance is undetermined.
