Alpha-fetoprotein and Acetylcholinesterase Analysis - Amniotic Fluid
Use
This test provides analysis of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in amniotic fluid for the detection of open neural tube defects and ventral wall defects. Results must be interpreted with prenatal ultrasonography; a positive result does not guarantee an anomaly. Essential gestational information must be included for accurate interpretation. Indications for testing include cases with prenatal ultrasound findings that suggest congenital anomalies, positive first or second trimester screenings indicating potential open neural tube defects, and situations with elevated reproductive risks due to prior occurrences or family history of such defects.
Special Instructions
Specimen requirements include collecting 20-30 cc of amniotic fluid in two sterile 15 ml conical centrifuge tubes. Discard the first 2 cc of fluid collected. Sample should be shipped at room temperature to the laboratory by overnight express and must arrive within 48 hours of sample collection. The specimen cannot be frozen and should be handled carefully to maintain viability.
Limitations
Testing is contingent on proper specimen handling and transportation to avoid contamination or degradation, which may lead to inconclusive results. The interpretation of test results is not definitive, requiring further assessment through ultrasonography. False positives may occur and should be considered in clinical context alongside the patient's history.
