Amphiphysin Antibody Titer Assay, Serum
Use
The Amphiphysin Antibody Titer Assay is useful for evaluating patients with recent onset of a subacute neurological disorder where a paraneoplastic basis may be suspected. This is particularly useful in patients with a history, risk factors, or a family history of cancer, such as lung or breast cancer. The detection of anti-amphiphysin antibodies indicates a potential autoimmune etiology related to neurological presentations and directs subsequent investigations towards finding associated cancers like breast carcinoma or small-cell lung carcinoma.
Special Instructions
This test is not orderable separately and is only conducted as a reflex test if the indirect immunofluorescence pattern suggests the presence of amphiphysin antibodies. It is performed at an additional charge.
Limitations
Nonorgan-specific autoantibodies at high titers can inhibit the identification of amphiphysin IgG by indirect immunofluorescence. In such cases, a Western blot assay is recommended for confirmation. Additionally, neuron-restricted patterns that do not meet the criteria for amphiphysin antibodies may be categorized as 'unclassified antineuronal IgG'. Complex patterns involving non-neuronal elements may be deemed 'uninterpretable'.
